Mason

Mason

Every now and again one of those records comes around that defies being pigeon holed and given a label. Mason burst onto the dance scene with their groundbreaking tune ‘Exceeder’ back in 2006. The record swiftly went from destroying dance floors to tearing it up the World’s charts and laying the foundations for more forward thinking music.

This record, along with most of what Mason produced since falls into the same category. It’s not about making records for a particular set of Djs or scene but just good honest music! As a result Mason’s tunes are played by a huge array of decksman from Pete Tong and Zane Lowe (BBC Radio 1) to Fat Boy Slim, Eric Prydz and Carl Cox.

Using Iason’s classical violin training coupled with a love of diverse music and a hi-tech apprenticeship in a ring tone sweatshop, together with his studio and live partner Coen – a man fixated with ancient synths, playing in rock bands and a mean vocalist to boot – the Mason boys are now forging their own unique path. The duo have the musical arsenal required to make everything from filthy late night dance club bombs to daytime radio anthems. These Dutchmen are unpredictable in both what is played in the club and what is created in the studio.

The Mason sound takes a great understanding of melody and fuses it with technological know-how sheer musicianship and dance floor savvy. It is dance music for the thinking man, but not so clever to be alienating and dull. A debut artist album is taking shape at the moment and features some interesting styles and flavours as well as guests such as NYC rapping legends ( Run) DMC and Kurtis Blow, Grammy nominated and UK number 1 album artist Sam Sparro, renowned singer songwriter Matt Hales ( AKA Aqualung) , Massive Attack collaborator Debbie Clare and the frontman from cult Belgian act dEUS, Tom Barman.

With a Worldwide hit record under their belt for Data/Ministry Of Sound as well as numerous releases and remixes for labels like Great Stuff, Skint, Pickadoll and Brique Rouge Mason continue to garner respect from above as well as under ground. Mason has recently lent his sound to remix on numerous artists including Moby, Gabriella Cilmi, Hadouken and Robyn. 2009 also sees the launch of Mason’s label, Animal Language and a regular party under the same name in Amsterdam. The imprint is already making fans of the likes of Carl Cox, Nic Fancuilli and Mylo.

Humour is a long forgotten part of music and something Mason is keen to re-introduce as a key ingredient. Anyone listening to his “de-mix” of Exceeder being replayed by a brass band will know the boys aren’t taking things too seriously. Forthcoming album track titles such as ‘Who Killed Trance’ and ‘Bigboy Exercises’ are also refreshingly tongue-in-cheek and every track on his Animal Language label will carry a ‘re-furb’ ; a re-interpretation in a totally different musical style, be it speed metal, Mariachi or Balkan!

Behind the decks, or CDJ’s at least, Iason, the dj-ing face of ‘Mason’, has honed his craft for over fourteen years since falling for the grooves of early hip hop and spinning in his local clubs. Things progressed to warming up for Global mega star Tiesto at his gigs around the World where Mason also jammed violin to his own and his compatriot’s sets. The fiddle has since been rested, but Mason continues to rock crowds wherever he plays. He has headlined at some of the World’s finest clubs and festivals including headlining the massively opulent ‘Sensation White’ parties around Europe as well as appearing with top billing at Dance Valley in Holland and at Creamfields in the UK.

Mason is currently resident at trailblazing club night ‘Electronation’. The uber cool Dutch based event also had Mason compile and mix their five-year anniversary album this year. Speaking of mixes, there’s ‘The Amsterdam Tapes’, Mason’s very own mix album series in collaboration with hand held DJ gadget ‘Pacemaker’ to released in Autumn 2008 to much critical acclaim. The first album was Mixmag’s compilation of the Month. The Dutch maestro also just broadcast a very well received Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1.

2009 is set to be a big one for Mason both as a production team and as a DJ. If sheer talent and karma have anything to do with it then expect to be hearing this name a lot in the future.

The Mechanism

The Mechanism are three individuals creating a fresh and bold new sound made for big stages and large sound systems. If ever there was a case for the whole being much bigger than the sum of the parts, than The Mechanism are the proof.

Born out of two distinctly different previous bands in very different musical camps, this new venture comes from a merger of the vocal/guitar and writing talents of Belasco's Tim Brownlow, and the uber modernity and technical genius of Richie Kayvan, of cult club duo 'Dogzilla'. The third member is the rapidly ascending DJ and producer Dale Corduroy who's tracks regularly grace the airwaves of Radio 1 in the UK.

The Mechanism are now creating a "stadium dance" sound all of their own. Combining distinctive and haunting vocals, guitars and club beats wrapped in lush production the resulting sound is like Thom Yorke and Billy Corgan doing battle with Faithless and BT. The Mechanism's sound is simple yet richly layered and dynamic enough to rock dance floors whilst remaining interesting and non-formulaic enough to listen to on headphones.

After deals with City Slang, Vertigo (Universal) and Supermusic, Belasco’s music has found itself in Hollywood movies, mulit-millions selling video games (FIFA Soccer), cult TV series (four tracks in One Tree Hill) and massive compilations alongside the likes of Blur, Athlete, Radiohead and Nick Cave. The Avatars vocalist has cut his teeth in the live arena with Belasco appearances at European festivals such as Isle Of Wight (UK), Haldern and Bochum Total (Germany), Alive (Belgium) and Music In My Head (Holland) with the likes of PJ Harvey, Cardigans, Paul Weller, Iggy Pop, Bright Eyes and Patti Smith.

Dogzilla's eponymously titled debut was featured in the cult Britflick 'The Football Factory' and 'The O.C' and was followed by the huge single 'Without You'. Thus began an impressive first foray into the club scene which garnered support from household names such as Armin Van Buuren, Judge Jules, Tiesto and Paul Oakenfold. 'Without You' was named track of the year by Paul Van Dyk. Dogzilla also performed live at Escape Into The Park, Gatecrasher Summer Sound System,Dance Valley and Mr. Corsten's Full-on Ferry in front of thousands of frenzied clubbers. Musically the The Mechanism sound is an intelligent blend of rock and tough, groovy electronica.

The act are very much aiming towards a full live show and between the members there is a vast amount of live experience and real musicianship. An album is well on the way to being finished and this year should be a very big one for this unique hybrid project.

Andy Morris

There can be few successful DJs born in the South Australian desert, but Andy Morris is one of them; having previously been nominated for a grammy award as well as being in DJ mag's top 50 DJs in the World.

Growing up in Sydney, Andy began Djing while studying at University, playing to finance his studies. It was his move to London in 1991 saw his musical career take off. Writing for DJ magazine, he was also playing and promoting clubs such as Kinky Overdose and the Café De Paris. This led to residencies at the legendary Club UK and the Leisure Lounge. Andy has since played in pretty much every country in the World, even Kazakhstan has been rocked by the big Australian!

Andy Morris

Andy built a solid foundation with his weekly Thursday underground dance radio show on Kiss 100 FM, London where his cult show ran for 9 years, outlasting most of his peers. He went on to host a weekly show on Ministry Of Sound Radio.

Andy has dented the charts and damaged dancefloors with the production and remixing partner Stuart Crichton, known as Narcotic Thrust. The boys enjoyed a UK chart No 9 record with the anthemic 'I Like It', a track that went to be a worldwide hit.. 'I Like It' followed the style its predecessor 'Safe From Harm' with the funk provided by the Brand new Heavies rhythm section and vocals by Zero 7's Yvonne John-Lewis.

'Safe from Harm' was signed directly by Pete Tong after hearing the record being played by Deep Dish in a Washington Club. It soon became a favourite of charts of Sanchez and Tenaglia as well as being an official club chart Number 1 and the most played record on UK national Radio 1, ending up at number 23 in the national charts. It was undoubtedly one of the biggest dance tunes of 2002. Q Magazine included 'Safe From Harm' in its '5o most important electronic records of all time'.

Narcotic Thrust also remixed Kylie Minogue's , 'Red Blooded Woman' , Depeche Mode, and were responsible for one of the remixes of 2003, Cassius' ' The Sound Of Violence' for Virgin Records.

In his own right Andy remixed Poloroid's massive 'So Damn Beautiful', a number 1 Cool Cuts, Buzz Chart and Club Chart record for which Andy's mix became the 7" Radio Mix. He has also recently given his trademark sound to, DT8'S top 20 'Sun Is Shining Down On Me' as well as mixing Chris Coco's 'Only Love' and revamping releases for Hed Kandi and Peter Rauhofer's *69 Record label. Andy also mixed compilation albums for DJ Magazine and 'Northern Nights' for Clubhouse Music in Russia.

Andy is currently working with numerous producers and writers including Eric Kupper, Dan Mckie ( Pacha Recordings) and Dick Trevor . He has just remixed Benni Bennassi/David Bowie's 'I Am The DJ' for Postiva with Dan Mckie and released a single on the producer's own 1980 Records label.

One of the most versatile DJs around, Andy remains the consumate professional behind the decks. He can rock a progressive house crowd in the small hours or play the funkiest tracks early doors. His preferred style is a rocking blend of chunky tribal sounds although Andy's adaptability has always been his major strength.

Animal Language

Animal Language

Animal Language is the genre dodging, forward thinking imprint of Dutch duo 'Mason'. Iason Chronis (the DJ side of Mason) and Coen Berrier have been busy putting the fun back into dance music with their amazing production skills and irreverent outlook on the electronic scene.

The Mason sound follows a simple method. Their understanding of melody and a canny ability to fuse it with technological know-how, sheer musicianship and dance floor savvy creates dance music for the thinking man, but not so clever to be alienating and dull. This is about rocking floors and letting the good times roll. This fledgling label is starting to gather support from far and wide, crossing boundaries with the depth and variety of DJ support. With everyone from Carl Cox, John Digweed, Nic Fanciulli, Sander Klienenberg, A-Trak , Chris Lake , Darren Emerson and Mylo behind the label, things are certainly heading in the right direction.

Mason have just licensed their massive collaborative track with (Run) DMC and Sam Sparro from Animal Language to the Ministry Of Sound in the UK and have bags more of their innovative releases scheduled for the next few months including everything from strong vocal tracks through to pure club fuelled bombs.

Each release comes with the signature a completely random re-interpretation of the original tune. Styles can vary from brass band, 80's synth pop to heavy rock. Its all very random and more importantly fun.
